Typhoon Merbok hits Hong Kong and southern China

Hong Kong was hit by strong winds and heavy rain driven by Typhoon Merbok. The city avoided major damage as the storm made its way across the region. Elsewhere, flights have been cancelled and school days suspended in the Guangdong province in southern China, as the typhoon moves inland.
