The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Japan’s ruling coalition, keeps its ⅔ majority in the house thanks to its partner Komeito in the snap vote last Sunday. The two parties combined hold 326 seats of the 475 seat house, so the coalition retains its power to pass laws without the upper house of parliament.

The biggest opposition party to the LDP is the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), which only won 73 seats, an increase since 2012, but well short of the 100 or so it needs to aim for a majority vote in the next election.

Meanwhile, the Japanese Communist Party more than doubled its presence in the Diet to 21 seats and can now submit legislation for the first time.

These results mean Prime Minister Abe has the support of his political party, giving him a third electoral victory in two years.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
